Travelling back to Davao City from my farm in Kidapawan City yesterday, I dropped by the mango outlets in Digos City to buy a few kilos.
When before the ripe mangoes were sold at 3 kilos for P100, I was shocked to learn that the price per kilo is between P80 to P120.
The vendors told me that the prices went up because of the dearth of supply as the mango industry reels from infestation and low fruit production.
This is precisely the reason why the Agriculture Department is holding a series of regional consultations for mango stakeholders to address the issues and concerns.
The first forum was held in Davao City last week and the next leg will be in Lingayen, Pangasinan on Friday, Aug. 11.
Two more regional consultations will be held in Cebu City on Aug. 18 and Iloilo before the end of August.
The 5-Year Road Map for the Philippine Mango Industry will be crafted after the regional consultations.
Hopefully, when the mango industry recovers five years from today, the price of my favorite fruit would not be as high as it is today.
